Duomo di Milano - Saint Bartholomew Saint Bartholomew the Apostle is said to have been skinned alive. This statue by Marco d'Agrate (1562) shows him draped in his own skin. I distinctly remember having to portray Saint Barholomew in a church ritual as kid and being quite disappointed that I wasn't one of the cool characters.

St. Euphemia was fed to lions and bears. And St. Castulus was buried alive. Why did artists paint and sculpt scenes of torment? Martyrdom was a badge of honor for these Christian saints because their suffering brought them closer to Christ. By showing a skinned saint, artists drove home the story of Bartholomew's life.

St. Bartholomew (detail), Michelangelo, Last Judgment, Sistine Chapel, fresco, 1534-41 (Vatican City, Rome; photo: Alonso de Mendoza) Even more poignant is Michelangelo's insertion of himself into the fresco. It's called Saint Bartholomew Flayed by Renaissance sculptor Marco d'Agrate, 1562. It's a statue of Saint Bartholomew holding his own skin. I was drawn to this statue in the cathedral, not because I knew anything about it, but because it was just so different from all the other statues. I thought the wrapping he wore was a cloth.
